Oregon State University's Collaboration with the University Innovation Alliance

In September 2014, Oregon State University joined with 10 partner institutions to form the University Innovation Alliance (UIA), a consortium of 11 large public research universities dedicated to improving educational outcomes and degree attainment for all students regardless of socioeconomic background.  OSU's participation in the UIA advances OSU Strategic Plan 3.0, Goal #1, provide a transformative educational experience for all learners, as well as the student success goals announced by President Ray in the 2016 State of the University address.  Each year, the UIA initiates a collaborative project aligned with its mission with each university adapting the project goals to its own institutional context and student needs.

Year 1 (2014-15): Predictive Analytics

The Alliance’s Year 1 project challenged member institutions to utilize predictive analytics to enhance student success.  At OSU, we adopted EAB’s Student Success Collaborative (SSC) to provide our academic advisors and administrators with predictive analytics tools to facilitate more robust proactive advising interventions.  Utilizing 11 years of OSU enrollment data on over 80,000 students, EAB generated a custom predictive model to serve as the basis for the SSC advising platform.  In addition, Institution Reports provided by SSC contain a trove of historical student success data at the institution, college, and major level including graduation rates by grade earned in a specific course and a ranking of courses most predictive of graduation.

Year 2 (2015-16):  Monitoring Advising Analytics to Promote Success

The Year 2 project for the UIA centered on understanding the effect of proactive, intensive academic advising on the retention and progression of first-generation and low-income college students through the MAAPS supplemental advising program and accompanying research study (funded by $8.9M First in the World grant).  Housed in the Academic Success Center, OSU launched its MAAPS program with a cohort of 460 first-year students in Fall 2016.

Year 3 (2016-17):  Financial Interventions to Support Completion

The Alliance's Year 3 project focuses on utilizing financial interventions to support student progression and completion.  Examples of such interventions include emergency micro-grants, completion grants to seniors with unpaid account balances, enhanced work-study programs, and inclusion of a scholarship component in student support programs.  OSU is now exploring and scaling up strategies to address financial barriers to student success based on insights and successful program models from other UIA institutions.
