About URSA Engage

URSA Engage is designed to establish mentoring relationships for undergraduates early in their academic programs at OSU. The goal is to provide first and second year students, and transfer students in their first year at OSU, opportunities to pursue research or a creative activity under the guidance of an OSU mentor. Students who are selected will receive an award of $750 and their faculty mentors will receive $250 in development funds. The program is available to undergraduates and mentors at all OSU campuses and across all academic disciplines. We encourage projects that integrate interdisciplinary work.

Information for Mentors

  • Faculty who would like to mentor a student will express their interest by submitting the Mentor Summary Form which will include information about the mentor’s research focus, examples of potential projects, a mentoring plan, and contact information.
  • Mentor summaries will be posted on the URSA webpage for students to see.
  • Mentors whose summaries are posted will need to be willing to respond to students that approach them, and to meet with them, if needed, prior to submission of the application by the student; thus, mentors decide which and how many students they are willing to mentor.
  • Mentors can be included on more than student application. More than one student may be selected per mentor to provide opportunities for team work, when appropriate.
  • Mentors of URSA Engage awardees will need to commit to meeting with URSA Engage Awardees at least once a week, or 2-3 times a quarter if a graduate student or postdoc is available to meet with the mentee at least once a week.
  • Graduate students and post-doctoral scholars are not eligible to serve as the primary mentor submitting the application but may mentor URSA Engage Awardees along with the primary faculty mentor.
  • Mentors need to have approvals in place prior to commencement of URSA Engage projects for activities requiring compliance oversight (e.g. IRB, IACUC). Mentors should allow sufficient time for the review and approval process.

Information for Students

  • Only first and second year students, and transfer students in their first year at OSU, are eligible to apply.
  • Students will review mentor summaries (soon to be posted online), approach mentors whose research is of interest to them, discuss potential projects with the mentors, and then submit their student application.
  • A Mentor Approval Form signed by the mentor, is required during the student application process.
  • URSA Engage Networking/Informational Workshops will be organized for connecting eligible students with potential mentors, and to help students with the application process.
  • Students can submit only one application.
  • Awardees are expected to engage with their projects for an average of 5 hours a week for the 15-week duration of the project (mid-Winter 2018 to the end of Spring 2018).
