Mission Statement

Our graduates are our greatest contribution to society. More than ever, students are seeking a high quality education that will provide them with the skills and preparation necessary to succeed in the workforce and become engaged, socially-conscious citizens of the communities in which they will live and serve. To this end, Academic Programs and Learning Innovation focuses on advancing this goal in three key areas:

High Quality Educational Programs
Program and curriculum planning, development, and assessment are key to providing a high quality education for ALL our students. Our offerings provide both a solid foundation of knowledge as well as the specialized skills and expertise necessary to meaningfully engage in an ever-changing world. Academic Programs and Learning Innovation will support strategic planning of programs and curricular offerings coupled with consistent and systematic assessment. This full-cycle process will assure the high quality of our academic programs, and the high value of the credentials we offer our graduates. 

Transformational Educational Experiences
Strategic use of learning innovation is at the core of providing ALL students with transformational academic experiences. We will support faculty in the integration of technology, high impact practices, experiential learning, and innovative pedagogical approaches to advance teaching and learning across the institution. Providing consistent and easy-to-access resources for faculty support in this area will advance OSU’s learning ecosystem across all modalities of teaching and learning. 

Clear Academic Pathways
Access to meaningful educational experiences through affordable, structured pathways will be one of the central goals of our efforts. From recruitment of students to graduation of students, we will support macro-processes that provide clear academic pathways that help onboard students, provide course access and registration, support macro-level advising tools, and carry students through graduation processes. Student-centered services will guide administrative processes to facilitate student success for ALL students. 

Through cross-campus partnerships and collaboration, we support and advance OSU’s student success goals to improve and equalize graduation rates, and we support faculty in their pursuit of teaching excellence and learning innovation.

Leadership

 

Dr. Susana Rivera-Mills

Vice Provost, Academic Programs and Learning Innovations

 

Susana Rivera-Mills serves as the Vice Provost of Academic Programs and Learning Innovation. Her previous positions at OSU include: Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Executive Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Professor of Spanish Linguistics and Diversity Advancement. Susana holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Iowa and the Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of New Mexico. Since her arrival at OSU in the fall of 2007, she has been involved in developing mentoring and leadership programs for faculty and students, building community partnerships, advancing student engagement and success strategies, supporting leadership development in higher education nationally, promoting internationalization, participating in engaged research, and advancing initiatives around equity and inclusion.

Susana founded the Center for Latino/a Studies and Engagement, an engaged research center on the OSU campus, and has established numerous partnerships with community organizations statewide that serve Latino populations. As a sociolinguist, her research has focused on Latino communities, Latino identity, Spanish language use and culture, and linguistic attitudes. She has published several books and numerous articles on related topics.

As Vice Provost, her main objective is to promote and improve student success at OSU, a critical element of the university’s Strategic Plan, with a particular emphasis on increasing and equalizing retention and graduation rates across all student populations. In her role as Vice Provost, she advances university goals for student success, works in partnership with academic colleges, Student Affairs, Faculty Affairs, and Information Services. She also coordinates the development and enhancement of high-impact educational practices, the use of data analytics to inform decision-making, and strategic planning for enrollment and academic programs. Susana oversees a suite of units, including Enrollment Management, Extended Campus, ROTC, Academic Programs, Assessment & Curricular Processes, the Center for Teaching & Learning, and Study Abroad.
